VR PCs

Introduction

Various "VR PCs" are in use at both the Sylvius and FSW buildings. These are powerful gaming PCs (with powerful GPUs) that can run intensive tasks such as XR experiences. They can be connected to headsets like the Meta Quest, the Varjo XR series, or the Vive.

Management

These computers are managed by SOLO, specifically by the SOSXR team and Labsupport.

The OS on these devices is Windows 11 (unmanaged).

User Accounts

Since these machines do not run a managed Windows 11 version, local accounts will need to be used on these computers.

The primary managing / admin account is the Labsupport account.

When possible, researchers will be assigned a Standard account, which they can use for the duration of a study. Researchers are advised to only use diskspace in their own account's home folder (≠ the C:\ drive). Once their study is complete (and no follow-up study is planned for the near future), researchers should be advised that their account will be deleted from the machine, including any programs installed for the study.

However, due to a longstanding bug in the Meta / Oculus software, some researchers require admin accounts.

Researchers should be advised never to store (sensitive) research data on these machines.

Network Access

When computers are used in a lab for any period of time, they should be registered on a wired network port via ISSC.

The PCs all have wifi cards, and can be logged into eduroam / iotroam for special occasions (e.g. for casting between PC and Quest headset), but this should not be standard procedure.

Software

Software updates are done manually.

Software is installed on an as-needed basis. It often includes: Unity Hub, Horizon Connect, Steam, SteamVR, Varjo Base, and others.
